Q.
"I'm searching for the perfect wedding
cake, but need guidelines on common bakery
terms. Also, how much should I expect to pay?
Is there an elegant way to keep cake costs
down? "
A.
"The two most important elements to a wedding
cake are the taste and how it looks. When
you search for a baker, you should taste samples
and review a number of portfolios that the
bakers have executed." says Elisa Strauss,
cake designer and and owner of Confetti Cakes
in New York City. Strauss says "There
are two components to any cake: filling and
frosting. The fillings can be a yummy butter
cream (coming in a variety of flavors from
plain vanilla to decadent chocolate) or accompanied
by fresh fruit preserves, rich chocolate genache
or citrus curds like lemon or lime,"
says Strauss. The choices in frostings, according
to Strauss, are what confuse clients. "If
you want a homier, more rustic look, you may
want a butter cream icing (but this can melt
very easily in warm temperatures)," says
Strauss. Finally, when it comes to pricing,
the Confetti Cakes baker says "that it
really rests on where you are getting married
but you should expect to pay from $6-$20 dollars
a slice per person. It depends on the complexity
of the design. A three-tier cake, for example,
serves about 100 guests. " Strauss adds:
"A great way to keep costs down is by
ordering a plain cake, and then decorating
it with fresh flowers or fruit rather than
a more intricate design." |
